Travelling to Cherbourg
Paris is situated southeast of Cherbourg, and is a relatively short three-hour
journey away. From the capital, take the A13 out of Paris as far as Caen, a
distance of approximately 240kms; from here, connect with the RN13 to reach
Cherbourg, 120kms farther away. If coming by car from the UK, the most obvious
route across the Channel would involve using one of the ferry services that
dock at Cherbourg's port.
The European train network connects many parts of France with other major cities
on the continent. If arriving from Britain, train routes would involve traversing
the Channel by means of the Channel Tunnel - a 340-kilometre journey which takes
roughly 3 hours.
From Paris, trains leave frequently for Cherbourg from Gare St Lazare, departing
every two hours or so and taking approximately three hours. If you are moving
on from Cherbourg, trains leave regularly from the local station on Avenue Francois-Miller,
at Place Jean-Jaures.
Coaches connect Cherbourg with other cities in France and Europe. The European
bus networks are a cheap and efficient means of getting around.
There are airports at both Cherbourg and nearby Caen. Neither has scheduled
flights from the UK, however; so if heading for Cherbourg from Britain, it would
be best to fly into Paris' Charles de Gaulle Airport, which receives 10 flights
daily from Heathrow.
If you want to go straight to Cherbourg from the UK, ferries are an extremely
cost-effective and easy way to make the trip, as they take you directly to the
town and operate all year round, several times a day. From Portsmouth, P&O
operates standard ferries and the Superstar Express - which makes the journey
in less than three hours. From Pool, Brittany ferries cross the Channel in approximately
four hours. There are also ferries arriving at Cherbourg from Rosslare, Ireland.
