What to see by car: Cherbourg
There are a number of striking châteaux in the surrounding environment,
all of which are easily accessible by car.
In the nearby town of Tourlaville stands a majestic Italian Renaissance construction
which was originally built by the Ravalet family in the 16th century, and is,
unsurprisingly, known as Château Ravalet. It was restored in the 19th
century in a style fashionable at the time, and is sheltered by tall trees.
It also boasts delicate greenhouse constructions, intermittent ponds and winding
paths. Today Château Ravalet is a national monument.
Ten kilometres away from Cherbourg in Urville-Nacqueville is Chateau Nacqueville,
built by French nobility in the 16th century. The beauty of the home itself
is rivalled only by the magnificence of its English garden, which is complete
with water features and a pond mirror, and is famous for its azaleas, rhododendrons
and giant gunneras.
Château de Martinvaast lies 6kms away from Cherbourg, in Domaine de Beurepaire,
but the only element of the original building that remains is the ancient Norman
dungeon. However, there is an attractive wing that dates back to the 19th century
and a charming English garden.
If you tire of the châteaux, Cherbourg is also a fantastic starting point
for outings to the relatively unexplored region of Val de Saire, with its awe-inspiring
landscapes.
