What to see by car: Dijon
Dijon is the perfect starting point from which to explore the magical region
of Burgundy, renowned for its spectacular scenery and delectable wines. These
features apart, the area is saturated with history and culture, inherited from
the first Roman settlements and the Middle Age scholars, sculptors and architects
whose creations remain there today.
The nearby town of Beaune lies only 30 minutes by car from Dijon, and the route
is dotted with famous wine villages where you can stop and sample some of the
world's finest vintages. The town itself boasts the legendary Hôtel-Dieu,
an ancient hospital which today functions as a retirement home. The Hôtel
des Ducs de Bourgogne, built during the 14th to 16th centuries and housing the
Burgundy Wine Museum, is well worth a visit.
Wine connoisseurs will also be interested in the Pommard Winery, one of the
largest in the region, and the Calvert Company, which offers tours of the extensive
underground cave system where its wine is produced. Beaune is also well known
for its Saturday morning market.
The UNESCO World Heritage site of Lyon is easily accessible by car from Dijon,
and is memorable for both its cuisine and its historical value. Its streets
are lined with medieval and Renaissance buildings and the old quarter is traversed
by a network of traboules (covered passageways) through which visitors can wander
to visit shops, art galleries, museums and the notable St-Jean Cathedral, a
Gothic and Romanesque structure with magnificent stained-glass windows.
The city is also known for its textiles, silk-weaving, music, dance and art
festivals; and is recognized as the gastronomic capital of France. Every night,
more than 200 buildings are illuminated to show off the town's rich architectural
heritage.
There are significant cathedrals in both Vezelay and Autun. The Loire Valley
is home to a number of châteaux. Chenonceau and Chambord, which contain
original 17th century furniture and artwork, allow visitors a wonderful glimpse
into the life of French royals.
The famous city of Paris and popular tourist attraction of Versailles are less
than 200kms away from Dijon.
