Mini guide to Grasse
The aromatic city of Grasse is only 11 miles north of Cannes. This is a town
resplendent with roses, daffodils, lavender and violets, and it is also the
capital of the perfume industry. At one time, Grasse was a resort favoured by
royalty from both France and England; these days it still attracts a healthy
number of visitors looking for some respite from the mayhem of Cannes.
It's not surprising that many of the town's visitors are in Grasse to learn
about the perfume industry, and the Musée International de la Parfumerie
will give you a comprehensive, and often amusing account of the manufacture
of perfume. The museum also is home to a 3,000-year-old mummy's perfumed hand
and foot, which have for centuries been preserved in perfume.
Grasse is a small town, and therefore you can explore most of its streets within
a day. The Villa Fragonard is dedicated to the famous 18th century painter,
Jean-Honoré Fragonard. It is a splendid building, and home to his and
some of his family's paintings.
Possibly one of the finest restaurants in all of France is the much vaunted
La Bastide St-Antoine (Restaurant Chibois)). Situated in a gorgeous 200-year-old
farmhouse surrounded by seven acres of verdant forest, it offers cuisine created
by the famous Cannes chef, Jaques Chibois, who prepares food in a majestic way.
This region of Provence is surely indelible in the minds of those who have
been fortunate enough to pass through it. The region has much to offer, with
the coastal area to the east (The Riviera), whose beaches have attracted millions
of fun-loving tourists, and the area of Provence itself, with its rich culture,
mountains and architecture.
By car from Marseille, take the A51 north to Aix-en-Provence, continuing along
the A8 east to Cannes. From Nice, follow the A8 southwest to Cannes. Most visitors
to Grasse arrive first in Cannes, a 20-minute drive away. Trains arrive in Grasse
frequently throughout the day, and the TGV from Paris via Marseille also services
Cannes. Buses run through to Grasse every 30 minutes from Cannes. Nice International
Airport is a 20-minute drive northeast of Cannes.
