Geography of Lyon

The city of Lyon is situated at the junction between the Rhône and the
Saone, 431kms southeast of Paris, 311kms north of Marseille. The city is home
to over 400,000 inhabitants and, if you include the surrounding areas, that
number reaches almost a million.
The Rhône is as mighty as the Saone is peaceful, and these rivers form
a part of the countryside that most travellers visit cursorily as they head
for the Mediterranean Express. To rush through this area would be impolitic,
as the land is adorned with mountains and rivers that form the Beaujolais country.
Exploring the Rhône you'll enter a world of culinary mastery. In Savoy
you'll find freshwater fish from the high lakes and game from the dense forests,
as well as speciality dishes that sound as delicious as they taste.
As for wines, the vineyards along the Rhône are some of the most prestigious
in France, established by the ancient Greeks. The higher quality wines are sold
under the names of the villages that produce them: Côtes-du-Rhône
Ardèche, Côtes-du-Rhône Gigondas, Tavel, Châteauneuf-du-Pape,
Muscat de Baumes-de-Venise, Condrieu and Beaujolais - which is said to be France's
premier wine.
The vineyards of Beaujolais start about 40kms north of Lyon. The region is
the most famous in the country and is home to around 180 chateaux which are
scattered throughout this part of France. It's possible to sample some of the
definitive wines at the chateaux. The region is rich in character and features:
vineyards nestled on hillsides, cottages, wine-growers' homes and historic castles.
