What to see by foot: Lyon

The city of Lyon is an engaging metropolis with a thriving business district
and plenty of parks. A city of this magnitude has something to offer everyone.
Lyon has a modern look to it: the city's café-lined streets are perpetually
filled with young fashion aficionados. Nevertheless, it's a city steeped in
history and is home to many architectural delights and insightful museums.
Lyon prospered in the silk trade - resulting in many lovely Renaissance buildings
about town. The town is more industrial today but remnants of the old city still
remain. The old town is a maze of narrow streets and traboule (passages) centred
around the pedestrian rue St-Jean which ends at the 12th- to 15th-century Cathedral
St-Jean.
Not far from the cathedral, opposite avenue Adolphe-Max and pont Bonaparte,
are the funicular station and the Vieux Lyon metro, from where you can ascend
to the town's Roman remains. These include two superb excavated theatres.
The Musee Gallo-Romain et Parc Archeologique de Fourviere is also located here
as well. One of the most impressive buildings at the northern end is the sixteenth-century
Hotel Paterin. It's worth making the hike up to Basilique de Fourvi?ere to see
the great views from the top.
Other places of interest include: the Musee d'Art Contemporain, Musee Historique
de Lyon and Musee de la Marionnette (puppet dolls). You might also want to see
the intriguing puppet performances at the Theatre de Guignol.
