What to see by car: Marseille

If you tire of the hustle and bustle of the big city, there are some superb spots
around the area, including picturesque towns and villages, lovely sandy beaches
and all that the French Riviera has to offer.
The village of Cassis, 15 minutes south of Marseilles, is the very essence
of Provence. The picturesque boutique-lined streets are ideal for strolling,
as is the port area with its restaurant terraces and luxurious boats. From here,
make your way to the sandy beach of La Grande Mer, which is excellent for swimming.
The main attraction in Cassis is the Calanques, a spectacular series of partially
submerged sea caves which contain prehistoric paintings; boat tours are available.
The villages and cliff-top walks to the west of town are magnificent. Port Pin
has a pretty little beach, while En-Vau is a climber's paradise.
North of Cassis, the vast area of parkland between Gémenos and Mount
Sainte-Baume, at the base of a small wooded valley, offers many fine walks.
Stroll through crowds of beech, ash, spruce and maple trees and encounter the
cool, refreshing atmosphere around the waterfall. Look out for the 12th century
abbey which holds religious concerts in the summer.
The ritzy resort town of Saint-Tropez is one of the most famous resorts on
the Côte d'Azur, but it's also famously expensive. Alternatively, the
long golden beach of Pampelonne is beautiful. Farther along you come to Cannes
and Antibes, which are just as glamorous and expensive as Saint Tropez. Cannes
is famous for its annual film festival and beach area, and Antibes is known
for its yachting culture.
Avignon, made famous by the summer festival of music and drama, should figure
on any visit to Marseille. It is a grand and well-fortified town, dominated
by the great Palais des Papes, a fortress of ten towers. At the centre is the
Place d'Horloge with its Gothic clock tower; the Petit Palais to the north is
now a museum of medieval painting and sculpture.
