Geography of Monaco

Located on a tiny speck on France's eastern Mediterranean coast, Monaco is an
awesome 1.95 square kilometres, 20 per cent of which has been reclaimed from the
sea during the course of the last 20 years.
Monaco lies on a narrow coastal strip which rises vertically upwards to its
highest point of about 65m. Its width varies from between a kilometre and a
mere 350m, and it is just 4kms long. The Principality has only one commune,
Monaco, whose limits are the same as those of the state. It is divided into
five areas. The centre of which is La Condamine which faces the famous habour.
All land around it is elevated with the wealthy suburb of Monte Carlo to the
west and the 'Rock', on which sits the Palace and famous Aquarium, to the west.
It has borders on its landward side with several communes of the French Department
of the Alpes-Maritimes; from west to east, these are: Cap d'Ail, la Turbie,
Beausoleil and Roquebrune Cap Martin. Monaco also faces the Mediterranean Sea
to the south.
There isn't a great deal of geographic variety possible in such a small area.
Most of Monaco is hilly, rugged and rocky, and there are some very fetching
sea cliffs. In fact if you wander more than half a dozen blocks back from the
harbour you begin to rise steeply and soon find oyurself back in France.
Monaco-Ville on the Rock is the old fortified town, home to the Prince's Palace,
the ramparts, the gardens, the cathedral and the Musee de l'Oceanographie. The
Condamine is the second-oldest area in Monaco. The name comes from the Middle
Ages and means 'the cultivable land at the foot of a village or castle'.
Monte-Carlo, created in 1866 and named in honour of Prince Charles III, hosts
an internationally famous casino, luxury hotels and leisure facilities. Attractions
include: Larvotto beach, the Monte Carlo Sporting Club and the Boulingrins Gardens.
On the western border with Cap d'Ail, Moneghetti is home to the Révoires
and the Exotic Gardens.
Fontvieille is the newest area of the Principality of Monaco and was created
from land reclaimed from the sea. This man-made waterfront area features a harbour,
stadium and sports complex, heliport, and a pollution-free industrial zone,
as well as some shopping areas and the new Columbus Monaco Hotel. It is located
to the extreme west of Monaco.
