What to see by foot: Monaco

Those with a taste for strolling should be able to circumnavigate the country's
4.5kms of borders before lunch, taking in some beautiful gardens, touristy alleys
and views of France and Italy along the way.
For a quick tour of the Principality, jump on the Azur express tourist train
which runs every 30 minutes and has commentary in English, Italian, German and
French. During the trip, you will discover the Monaco Port, Monte-Carlo and
its palaces, and the famous Casino Royale and its gardens, before returning
to the old town with its city hall the magnificent Prince's Palace.
Monaco's principal attraction is the casino across the bay, which has become
an institution. Built in 1878 by Charles Garnier, it is ornately furnished,
consisting of the auditorium of the opera with its profusion of bas-reliefs,
frescoes and sculptures, and the numerous gaming rooms which are also sumptuously
decorated.
The magnificent gardens and flowerbeds in front of the building are magnificent.
Between the casino and the Rock is the mind-blowing marina with its fabulous
collection of million-dollar yachts.
The 13th century Italianate home of Monaco's royal family, the Palais du Prince,
dominates the Principality from its position on the Rock. Visitors are shown
the throne room as well as Princess Grace's stunning state portrait. You can
also see the chamber where England's George III died. Arrive just before noon
to watch the 10-minute Relève de la Garde (changing of the guard).
The Musee de l'Oceanographie, founded by the Prince's grandfather, Albert I,
has one of the finest aquariums in Europe, containing more than 90 tanks. Displayed
are specimens Albert I collected during 30 years of expeditions aboard his oceanographic
ships. Alternatively, the intriguing Musée National de Monaco houses
one of the world's greatest collections of mechanical toys and dolls.
For real-people shopping, stroll rue Grimaldi, the Principality's most commercially
minded street, near the fruit, flower and food market, and boulevard des Moulins,
closer to the casino, where glamorous boutiques specialize in international
chic.
