What to see by car: Monaco

Between Nice and Monaco, three major roads, the Basse, Moyenne, and the Grande
Corniche respectively, are particularly attractive scenic routes for tourists.
Monaco also offers sea bathing at its most popular beach, the Plage de Larvetto,
off avenue Princess-Grace. Bathing is free and the sands are frequently replenished
with sand hauled in by barge. Just outside the border, the Monte-Carlo Beach
Club, complete with two large pools, beach cabanas, a restaurant, a café
and a bar, charges a hefty entrance fee that does not include its other amenities.
Farther down route N7, the Monte Carlo Golf Club is a par-72 course with ample
amounts of prestige, scenic panoramas and local history. Non-members will need
proof of membership at another club and green fees range from €85 to €100.
Still on the N7, only a mile from the Italian border, Menton has the mildest
climate on the French Riviera, with golden beaches cradled by mountains. Tropical
gardens are full of exotic vegetation and the steep streets of the old town
lead down to the Promenade du Soleil, which is lined with cafés and restaurants.
Nearby, Nice is a vibrant town with a distinct character. Belle époque
hotels line the seafront Promenade des Anglais, while the old town, with its
fine museums and warren of narrow streets, is busy with cafés and restaurants.
Nearby Cannes, best known for the International Film Festival, is another worthwhile
stop for its charming old town, seafront promenade and wide sweep of golden
sand.
In winter, skiing is available only a few hours drive from the Principality
at the French resorts of Peira Cava, Gréolières, Andon and la
Colmiane, among others. The Italian resorts of Limone and Monesi are also within
reach.
