Travelling to Montpellier
Montpellier can be easily accessed by road from other cities in Europe. Follow
the A9 from Spain; the A8-A9 from Italy; the A7-A9 from Paris and northern Europe;
and the A75 from Paris or central France. If coming by car from the UK, utilise
the train system through the Channel Tunnel or the ferry crossings, both of which
offer car transport services to France.
Once in Montpellier, you may wish to explore the city on foot, by bicycle,
or by horse drawn carriage, as many streets are pedestrianised and others crowded
and difficult to navigate.
Every day, 11 high-speed TGV trains leave Gare de Lyon, Paris, for Montpellier,
making the journey in approximately three hours. Two of these trains are non-stop,
and therefore quicker. There is also a slightly slower, overnight TGV service.
Montpellier is also connected to other parts of Europe by train; the trip from
Brussels takes five hours, and you can travel from London by Eurostar in seven
hours. The train station is located in town, close to most hotels; transport
to other parts of the city is available by bus and tramway.
Montpellier is serviced by both regional and international buses, including
Eurolines, Linebus and Iberbus, which connect directly to Barcelona, Madrid,
Marrakesh, Rome, Venice, Brussels, Amsterdam, Cologne, Berlin, Prague and Belgrade.
For most other European cities, it is necessary to get connecting buses from
Paris.
Montpellier Mediterranean International Airport receives daily return flights
to Paris and several other international cities. It can otherwise be reached
by connecting flights from Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris. The airport is
located eight kilometres southeast of Montpellier, and transport is provided
from the airport by both bus and tramway.
Ferries run from several ports in Britain to various destinations in France.
They are extremely cost-effective and run all year round. From ports of arrival,
visitors must continue by road or rail to Montpellier.
