Lying in a fantastic location on the French Riviera, Nice attracts visitors with
its superb Mediterranean climate, historic old town and excellent shopping. The
city also boasts top notch accommodation and a classy seafront promenade.
Exclusive boutiques mingle with Genoese Baroque architecture, and a wander
through the narrow streets here can be most rewarding. Ascend to nearby Château
Park, where the city was first founded by the Greeks, for excellent views out
over the sea and the sprawl of the old town.
Nice was once the haunt of wealthy aristocrats, but these days its population
is wildly varied. As the regional capital and the gateway to the beautiful Côte
d'Azur, Nice is near glamorous resorts like Cannes and Monaco, and within easy
reach of the rural villages of Provence.
Located in the southeast of France, the city is perched on the Mediterranean
coast halfway between Monaco and Cannes. The geography of the city is fairly
diverse, with the Alps coming down to meet the Mediterranean Sea. The historic
old town and port are located near a hill to the east of the sweeping bay of
Angels, and the new town is to the west.
Probably founded by the Greeks and later taken by the Romans, Nice subsequently
changed rulers several times and suffered damage in many wars. In 1388, it acknowledged
the supremacy of the House of Savoy, and in 1796 it was ceded to France by Sardinia.
Nice was returned to Sardinia in 1814, and in 1860 was ceded once again to France
after a plebiscite.
Nice's nearby international airport receives daily flights from Paris and the
rest of the world. The city is easy to reach by road from major centres, but
if you'd rather travel by rail, there are fast trains running all along the
coast and a frequent TGV. Several bus companies link Nice with French and international
destinations and the port has regular sailings to Corsica.
