Geography of Nice

Nice is located in the southeastern corner of France, in the Provence-Alpes-Cote-D'Azur
region on the French Riviera. Paris lies 931kms north and Italy is only 30kms
to the east. The city stretches along the Baie des Anges, where the Alps and the
Paillon River meet the sea.
The city is protected by lush wooded hills and the Estérel and Mercantour
mountains to the north. The port and the old town (perched beside a hill known
as Le Château) are in the city's southeast. In the northeast is the wealthy
residential neighbourhood of Cimiez, an area with a large park full of olive
groves.
The modern city stretches north and west of the central square, place Masséna,
behind the famous Promenade des Anglais. The promenade follows the crescent-shaped
shoreline westwards from the port.
The city also has many beautiful parklands and gardens. The Albert I Garden
is one of the oldest in Nice; overlooking the sea, it literally forms a green
path between the old and modern sections of the city. At 7,000 square metres
and 25 metres in height, Phoenix Park is one of the largest plant houses in
the world and home to dozens of species of fish, birds and exotic butterflies.
