What to see by car: Nice
    
Just north of the city centre in the wealthy residential suburb of Cimiez, are
the ruined remains of the ancient city of Cemenelum (the Roman capital of the
Alpes-Maritime province). The archaeological museum and site includes an amphitheatre
and public baths. The nearby 16th century monastery affords superb views of the
bay and displays some fabulous works of art. There are also a number of galleries
and musuems here dedicated to artists such as Pablo Picasso and others who based
themselves here in the early 20th century.
Nice's hinterland is a maze of remote hill-top villages connected by hairpin
mountain passes. The views are spectacular, and there are some particularly
attractive sights to take in, including: a chapel with 15th century frescoes
in the medieval village of Peillon; the Romanesque church and Main Square in
Peille; and the views from L'Escarène and its beautiful place de l'Église.
Antibes, to the west, is an important Mediterranean yachting centre. The Château
Grimaldi overlooking the sea houses the Musée Picasso, a superb collection
donated by Picasso. Nearby Juan-les-Pins is famous for its beaches and its jazz
festival, and Cap d'Antibes is a wooded peninsula hideaway of luxury villas
and hotels.
Cannes, next door, is famous for its grand boutiques and restaurants, not to
mention the film festival. Farther west, Saint-Tropez is now one of the most
famous resorts on the Côte d'Azur, and the fashionable summer crowds create
a vibrant atmosphere. Visit the market place on place des Lices, the cafés
around the harbour, and the long golden beach of Pampelonne.
To the east lies the Principality of Monaco, which attracts the wealthy to
park their super-yachts and blow loads of money in the lavishly decorated, world
famous Casino Royale. The Palais du Prince and nearby Musée de l'Oceanographie,
with Europe's largest aquarium, should not be missed.
