Mini guide to Paris

Sightseeing is an endless pleasure in Paris. At every corner, you can find the
most romantic square or the most appealing old building design. Gaze rapturously
at its breezy boulevards, impressive monuments and great works of art; then have
lunch in a local restaurant or just perch yourself on a café terrace and
watch the Parisian world go by.
Although Paris is a large city, the main attractions are all within walking
distance of one another. However, if you do tire easily, there is the excellent
and reliable metro system which has stations at all the important sights.
The Île de France region, of which Paris is the capital, harbours many
other attractions, including: the extraordinarily beautiful Château de
Versailles; elegant historical towns and villages; and the Disneyland theme
park, modelled on the original American parks.
Paris is divided by the Seine, which enters in the southeast and loops to the
north before leaving the city in the southwest. The river contains two islands:
the Île de la Cité and the smaller Île St Louis. The differences
are vast and varied between the districts of the city, both in terms of the
populations and the attractions.
Paris has been a theatre in which major events have been staged. It has also
been an intellectual, political and economic reference point since its foundation,
as well as the residence of kings for several centuries. It is a city of the
people, rich and poor, proud and sometimes treacherous, cosmopolitan yet insular.
This cultural and sociological mix gives Paris an irresistible charm.
Paris is central to the rest of Europe and has an excellent transportation
network, making the journey to the city easy. The city has two major international
airports with convenient connections to the centre; six train stations serving
all regions and all with metro access; and major road links from the coast and
international borders.
