Geography of Paris

The largest city of the country, Paris is located in north central France, on the River Seine in the Île de France region. It is situated in a low-lying basin, and relief within the city is generally slight, although the elevation gradually increases from the river to the low hills that ring the city's edge.

The highest natural feature within the city proper is the Butte de Montmartre, at 129m above sea level. The Paris metropolitan area contains nearly 20 per cent of the nation's inhabitants and dominates the economic, cultural and political life of France to a profound degree.

Central Paris, known as Intra-Muros (within the walls) is a circular shape, divided neatly in two by the River Seine, with 20 arrondissements (districts) spiralling clockwise from the centre in a logical fashion.

Baron Haussmann was responsible for the significant urban planning project from 1852 to 1870, and the 20 arrondissements date from this time. You can determine the arrondissement of an address from its postal code; they are the last two digits. For example, 75018 is the eighteenth arrondissement.

The area north of the river, the Rive Droite (Right Bank), includes the tree-lined avenue des Champs-Élysées, the Arc de Triomphe and the Louvre. The Marais, comprised of roughly the third and fourth arrondissements, is a quarter which has retained many small streets and hints at how old Paris might have looked.

The area south of the river, the Rive Gauche (Left Bank), is home to the city's most prominent landmark, the Eiffel Tower. The Latin Quarter, in the fifth arrondissement, is so named because it has been the centre of Paris' university life for over 700 years.
