What to see by foot: Paris

Paris is one of those cities that has so much to offer that you're well advised
to plan your days properly.
To the north of the Seine, the tree-lined avenue des Champs-Élysées
running west under the stately Arc de Triomphe is a good place to start a walking
tour. Just east of the avenue is the massive Musée du Louvre, home to
da Vinci's Mona Lisa; the odd looking Centre Georges Pompidou; and a lively
district of museums, shops, markets and restaurants.
Just south of here and on the Île de la Cité is the oldest and
most heavily visited part of Paris, home to the world famous 12th century Gothic
masterpiece - Notre Dame. You can climb the 75-metre north tower for spectacular
views over the River Seine and the city centre.
Take a leisurely, romantic stroll along the banks of the Seine, heading west
in the direction of the Esplanade des Invalides and the Hotel National des Invalides,
Paris' greatest single complex of museums. Before arriving at the esplanade,
stop off at the huge Musée d'Orsay - situated in an abandoned, prenivated
trains station.
The area to the west of here (Left Bank) is home to the city's most prominent
landmark, the Eiffel Tower (1889). Literally towering over the Champ de Mars
in the smart seventh arrondissement, the top floor offers an unforgettable sweeping
panorama over Paris. From directly underneath, there is a fascinating view of
the delicate ironwork of Gustave Eiffel.
Those who enjoy intimate, friendly boutiques should head for the Marais district,
in the fourth arrondissement. Alternatively, the winding rue des Rosiers in
the Jewish quarter has plenty of young designers whose works are displayed at
L'Eclaireur.
Pigalle is the seedy sex centre of Paris but also home to some good music venues
and the Moulin Rouge cabaret. Montmartre is heaving in summer but the views
over Paris from stunning Basilique Sacré-Coeur are unbeatable, and the
best area for an evening's café-hopping is the Marais district.
