What to see by car: Paris

If you want a break from the city, there is much to see by car in and around the Île de France region, from the grandeur of the Château de Versailles to the fun-packed Disneyland Paris theme park.

About eight kilometres away, on the western edge of the city is the Bois de Bolougne. This forested park has a web of winding paths ideal for strolling and forgetting the hustle and bustle of the city for a while. The area also boasts many belle époque mansions.

Just out to the west of Paris and south of Versailles is the grandest and most famous palace in France, the Château de Versailles. Built in the 17th century during the reign of Louis XIV, the palace and its grand halls, bedchambers, gardens, ponds and fountains are amazingly elaborate. The 75-metre hall of mirrors, where nobles could watch each other dancing, is especially breathtaking.

Disneyland Paris lies 32kms to the east of Paris in the suburb of Marne-la-Vallée. This lavish fun park is very much like the other two in the US and is comprised of five themed areas centred around the impressive Le Château de la Belle au Bois Dormant (Sleeping Beauty's Castle).

Main Street USA, Adventureland, Discoveryland, Frontierland and Fantasyland feature the usual array of rollercoasters and fun-for-all-the-family attractions. With cheeseburgers at €10 a throw, however, it's a good idea to fill-up at breakfast time.

In the other direction, Rouen is an attractive place for touring. It features lovely open parks and woodland, as well as some impressive architecture. The Cathédrale Notre Dame and its 14th century gatehouse with huge gilt clock dominate the town. The Musée des Beaux-Arts contains 17th to 19th century paintings, including masterpieces by Velázquez, Monet and Renoir.
