What to see by car: Rouen
If you have a car, the region of Normandy has plenty to offer in the way of excursions
and overnight stays. Its diverse landscapes include: a coastline sheltered by
towering, chalky cliffs; sandy beaches with vast stretches of turquoise ocean;
and the golden prairies and tranquil forests of the inland areas.
If a seaside stint is what you are after, head for the town of Dieppe, only
60kms from Rouen. Here you will find a 16th century flint and sandstone castle
on the west cliff. It is now a museum containing a significant collection of
crafted ivory, as well as paintings by Boudin, Lebourg and Pissaro and prints
by Braque. Below the castle lies a long stony stretch of coast which gives way
to a fine sand beach at low tide. Other attractions here are the restored churches
of Saint-Jaques and Saint Rémi.
Alternatively, make your way to Etretat, a beach resort supremely located in
an exquisite setting of jutting cliffs. The extraordinary rock formations of
l'Aiguille and Les Trois Portes lie nearby and are worth a look.
Between the Seine and the Orne, pastures, orchards, elegant villas and fields
of flowers stretch across the landscape, weaving an atmosphere of gentleness
and serenity. Between Domfront and Alencon there is a spectacular wooded area
over the foothills of the Massif Armoricain, where beech, oak and pine forests
cast their green-tinted shade.
If you are drawn by gastronomic delights, you may wish to consider a trip to
Camembert, the birthplace of the mouth-watering French cheese.
