Saint Remy de Provence Hotels
Mini guide to Saint Remy de Provence
Nestled at the foot of the Chaîne des Alpilles, only 20kms south of Avignon,
is the dreamy little town of Saint Remy de Provence. The endearing old town
is encompassed by a circle of boulevards no more than half a kilometre in diameter,
while the modern part stretches way out.
It was in Remy that Van Gogh painted such works as Cypresses and Olive Trees,
while he was contained in an asylum. At the Centre d'Art Présence Van
Gogh, you can see Van Gogh reproductions and extracts from letters. On Avenue
Vincent Van Gogh is the magnificent Site Archéologique de Glanum (Ruins
de Glanum), boasting an Arc Municipal, dating back to the time of Julius Caesar.
For a walking tour of the city, start your exploration on the Avenue de la
Résistance, adjacent to the Collègiale St-Martin. From there,
navigate the intertwining alleyways and serene park squares. You'll find yourself
at some point on Rue Hoche, the birthplace of Nostradamus.
In the old town, you'll find restaurants to suit all budgets; nevertheless,
if you are looking for quintessential French cuisine, then look no farther than
L'Assiette de Marie. With a stone-fronted façade and an extraordinarily
lavish interior, this restaurant offers a sublime eating experience.
Natural beauty and human artistry are both encapsulated in the area of western
Provence. Fruit, vegetables and wine are produced here alongside the Rhône
and the Durance rivers. For further exploration, follow the roads at the foot
of the Dentelles and the Alpilles, or head to the historic cities of Avignon
Finding your way to Remy is relatively easy after arriving in Avignon. If you're
driving, head south from Avignon along D571. By rail, TGV trains depart from
Paris' Gare de Lyon to Avignon; and the journey takes 2 hours, 38 minutes. Eurostar's
high-speed trains now bridge the gap between London's Waterloo Station and Avignon;
while local buses run frequently from Avignon to Remy, and take 45 minutes.
The fastest way to Avignon is to take a one-hour flight from Paris's Orly Airport
to Aéroport Avignon-Caumont.
