Geography of Strasbourg

The city of Strasbourg is located 489kms southeast of Paris and 217kms southwest
of Frankfurt. As one of France's most important cities, and the capital of the
Alsace region, Strasbourg is often visited by those who choose to tour France.
The city is also one of France's major ports, located about 4kms to the west
of the Rhine.
Alsace and Lorraine have had their fair share of strife, as they were constantly
being disputed over by France and Germany. It's not surprising neither country
wanted to capitulate and surrender these glorious provinces. Even though these
days both provinces are ruled by France, they still have an air of independence
which makes them all the more fascinating, and all the more worth taking the
time to explore.
Testament to this accolade, are the Vosges Mountains, where you can follow
La Route des Crêtes (Crest Road), paying a cursory visit to the numerous
wine towns that are dotted on the way. It's in these towns - notably omitted
from most guide books - that you'll discover the true meaning of the regional
culture.
The countryside is scattered with castles, and in the towns of Lorraine, you'll
find relics from the Middle Ages. There's no clear distinction between the regions
of Alsace and Lorraine, although it's been said that Lorraine is more French
in character and Alsace is more German.
Mention should be made of the culinary treats of the two regions. In Alsace,
many local dishes are prepared using goose and pork fat, which gives the dishes
a unique flavour. The region is also the leader in pâté production,
having over 40 varieties to choose from. In Lorraine, as well as butter and
cream, the chefs use copious amounts salted lard. Needless to say, meals are
not for the weight conscious. Both regions have a myriad of different wines.
