What to see by foot: Strasbourg
    
Strasbourg's streets are pedestrian friendly, enabling visitors to explore
the many architectural delights and friendly town squares with relative ease.
It's worth spending a few days in the town if you want to really appreciate
its subtleties.
Dominating the city centre is the Cathedral de Notre-Dame, with its single
spire encroaching into the clouds. The spire's viewing platform is a good place
to see the old town and, in the distance, the Vosges to the west. The interior
is lavishly adorned, with its nave and stained-glass windows particularly dazzling.
In the south transept are the cathedral's two most laudable sights: the slender
triple-tiered central column known as the Pillier des Anges, and the huge and
enormously complicated astrological clock.
Strasbourg's second most celebrated architectural sight is the Musée
de l'Oeuvre Notre-Dame. The museum is home to a comprehensive collection of
art from the Middle Ages and Renaissance in Strasbourg and Alsace. The museum
boasts a magnificent stained-glass head of Christ from about the 11th century.
There's also a window depicting an emperor from around 1200. The sculpture is
of great interest, as are the works of Strasbourg goldsmiths from the 16th and
17th centuries.
Other highlights include: beautiful La Petite France; the renowned 13th century
Pillier des Anges; Place de la Republique; Museum of Contemporary and Modern
Art; and Musee Alsacien. Also not to be missed are the Palais Rohan and Palais
de l'Europe. The city's two main squares, Place Kleber and Place Gutenburg,
are home to the seats of the Council of Europe and the European Court of Human
Rights.
Strasbourg also features fine cuisine and a range of frenetic nightlife options.
Place de la Cathédrale hosts an assortment of performers and artists.
All of the dances are done impromptu and take place against the illumination
of the cathedral.
