What to see by car: Strasbourg

If you have arrived in Strasbourg by car, then it's imperative that you explore
the hinterlands around the city. South of Strasbourg is the picturesque town
of Colmar, famed for its Gothic architecture and museums. The former Dominican
convent is now the site of the famous Musee d'Unterlinden, with its incredible
collection of Gothic art, featuring works by Matthais Grunewald. Stroll around
the sinuous streets, and take in the atmosphere of the Gothic period.
Nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts can revel in the splendour of the Black
Forest, not to mention the peaks and valleys of the Vosges Mountains. Alsace
is particularly enchanting in the winter, with a variety of shows, festivals
and concerts that take place throughout the season
Drive to Souffleheim, the Alsatian village north of Strasbourg, where ceramics
and pottery have been made since the Bronze Age. The town features about 15
outlets selling cake moulds, tureens, saucers and cups, and dinnerware - usually
in rustic patterns.
Other villages worth seeing are: Obernai, Illhauesern, Ribeauvillé and
Schiltigheim. The first three offer antiques, cobbled streets and indelible
charm. Schiltigheim, on the other hand, is famous for beer consumption.
One of the most romantic ways to spend time in Strasbourg is to take an excursion
on the Ill River from the Palais de Rohan. Daytime outings operate year round;
night excursions are offered from April to October. The 1 hour, 15 minute cruises
include a recorded commentary in English and French.
