Geography of Berlin

Berlin is bisected by the Spree River, which winds through the city and was
divided for 45 years until the reunification in 1989. Although the city was
almost bombed into oblivion during WWII, Berlin's post-war and post-unification
revival has been incredible. The city is now full of a variety of beautiful
gardens which make up an incredible one-third of the municipal area and are
a great getaway from the hustle-bustle of city life.
The Tiergarten is located centrally in Berlin and the park covers an amazing
252 hectares. It is the former hunting grounds of Prussian royalty and a favourite
destination among Berliners looking to wind down. The park boasts flower gardens,
canals, a lake, playgrounds, sculptures and over 23kms of walking trails.
The park is also home to the world's oldest zoo, the Tierpark Zoo, which opened
in 1854. The zoo boasts over 14,000 animals in beautiful natural enclosures.
In the centre of the park is the World Culture Centre, which looks like an oyster
and has been nicknamed the 'pregnant oyster' by locals.
The Botanischer Garten und Museum boasts an incredible number of plants from
all over the world. The park covers over 40 hectares and has 16 greenhouses,
full of exotic and tropical plants. The park is also home to the Botanical Museum,
which has an educational display on plants along with many scientific displays.
Grünewald is a virtual forest in the city, with lots of walking paths
and lakes. This park has become an important nature reserve in the city and
boasts the Grünewaldturm, which is a tower built in the 19th century to
memorialise Kaiser Wilhelm I. On the top of the tower is a restaurant with a
panoramic view of the park.
For something different, visit the Pfaueninsel (Peacock Island), which is a
garden that was created in the early 19th century in typical English garden
style. The garden gets its name from the palace Shloss Pfaueninsel, which was
built in 1794 by King Friedrich Wilhelm II for his mistresses. The ambience
in the garden is one of romance; and this is a very popular weekend destination
for couples in the summer.
