What to see by foot: Berlin

Due to its history as a divided city, Berlin even today, continues to have
two centres: the City West, near Zoo railway station; and the Kurfürstendamm
in Charlottenburg, and Mitte in the east along Unter den Linden and around Alexanderplatz.
It is easy to navigate the city by foot thanks for the television tower, which
can be seen from almost anywhere in the city.
The public transportation network within Berlin is efficient and convenient.
For visitors spending three or more days in Berlin, it makes sense to purchase
the Berlin-Potsdam Welcome Card, which allows the holder 72 hours of unlimited
public transport and discounts to museums, as well as other benefits.
Berlin's most famous landmark is the Brandenburger Tor (Brandenburger Gate).
Prior to the reunification, the Brandenburger Tor marked the boundary between
East and West Berlin. The gate was built in 1791, to symbolise peace. On top
of the gate is the Quadriga, a chariot with the winged Victory goddess, pulled
by four rearing horses. Today, the Brandenburger Tor symbolises freedom and
unity.
The Kurfürstendamm, also known as Ku'damm colloquially, is the shopping
street in Berlin. The most famous shopping destination is the department store,
known as KaDeWe. Don't miss eating in the food emporium at KaDeWe, where you
can sample cuisine from all over the world.
There are also many speciality stores and boutiques in the side streets which
are worth exploring. Another favourite shopping street is Tauentzienstrasse,
which is host to Berlin's major shopping mall. Berlin's most elegant shopping
can be found on Friedrichstrasse, home to all brand boutiques.
Prior to the reunification, the Checkpoint Charlie Museum was a favourite destination
for visitors. Checkpoint Charlie was the tower that signified the East-West
border. The museum here displays devices that people invented to escape to the
West. For those wanting to see 'the wall', just west of the museum is the East
Side Gallery, which has preserved a part of the real wall.
Berlin has a host of museums and galleries, too many for any visitor. If you
only see one museum, it has to be the Ägyptisches Museum (Egyptian Museum).
Here you can see the most famous bust of Queen Nefertiti, which is believed
to be from 1360 BC. The museum is full of breathtaking Egyptian artefacts, jewellery,
papyrus, tools and other objects from daily life of the ancient Egyptians.
