Historical interest: Berlin

Berlin has had a very tumultuous history. The city itself began to flourish
as a trading town in the early 13th century, thanks to the merchants that settled
there. Later on, Berlin's trade benefited from merging with the town of Cölln.
In the 15th century the Hohenzollern dynasty ruled from Brandenburg, with their
palatial residences in Potsdam, and later on in Berlin itself in what is known
today as the Marx-Engels-Platz. This dynasty brought not only political power,
but also wealth and trade to the city of Berlin.
As with many cities in Germany, Berlin was pretty much destroyed during the
Thirty Years War. However, by the 17th century, Berlin had regained its strength
under the rule of Friedrich Wilhelm. Wilhelm's son, Friedrich I, subsequently
became the first Prussian king, and by making Berlin his capital, it flourished.
Much was spent on the arts and beautifying the city: improvements which can
still be seen and experienced today.
It wasn't until the rise of the Nazi regime and WWII that Berlin was again
placed on the map. Berlin was badly bombed, almost every night, during the Allied
bombings between 1944 and 1945. The cityscape change dramatically with the Potsdam
Conference in August 1945, when the city was split up into zones among the victorious
powers: USA, Britain, France and the Soviet Union.
In 1948, the Soviets blockaded West Berlin and the now-infamous Berlin Airlift
kept the city going. In October 1949, East Berlin became the capital of the
German Democratic Republic and the Berlin Wall was suddenly built in August
1961 to stop East Germans from escaping to the West.
The reunification of Germany on the 9th of November 1989 was an emotional event
for many. Many Germans had had families split up when the wall was built and
this was a bittersweet reunion. The wall was destroyed, much of it becoming
souvenirs, and the German government moved its seat from Bonn to Berlin in 1991,
beginning a new era for Berlin.
