What to see by foot: Cologne
Among Germans, Cologne is famous for its annual 'Karneval' or carnival time.
During this time, the streets are packed with revellers and there is confetti
everywhere. For Europeans, Cologne is a Mecca for art, with many world-class
galleries. The city itself is Roman in origin and boasts the world famous Kölner
Dom (cathedral).
The construction of the Kölner Dom (Cologne Cathedral) began in 1248 and
this majestic cathedral is considered to be one of the greatest in the world.
Lying in the heart of the city, it is the largest Gothic cathedral in Germany,
and visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Cologne from the top of the south
tower. This grandiose cathedral can be best enjoyed from the south transept,
which illustrates its grand size and splendour - there are no important horizontal
lines in the structure, everything is vertical!
The most famous of the eight municipal and various private museums in the city
is the Museum Ludwig. This museum is home to one of the world's greatest collections
of the works of Pablo Picasso, with over 700 works by the artist on display,
such as the world famous 'Harlequin with Folded Hands' and 'Woman with Artichoke.'
The museum also boasts an extensive collection of modern art, including works
by Warhol, Dali, Lichtenstein and Rauschenberg, rivalling that of the Guggenheim
Museum in New York. Not to be missed is the Agfa-Historama, a collection of
art photography. It is the largest collection of historic photographs and cameras
in the world.
The city is very much an art haven and there are hundreds of galleries all
over Cologne for art lovers of any genre. Many of the galleries are well-established,
having opened in the rebuilding era after the war, and have become a focal point
of contemporary art in Germany. Walk along the St Apernstrasse, where many of
the leading art galleries are located. You will find everything from classic
to contemporary art.
