What to see by car: Cologne
Exploring the area in and around Cologne by car is very easy. Streets are well-signposted
and the Autobahns provide efficient and quick connections with other major German
cities. Cologne is the northern-most colony founded by the Romans and thus has
many historical sites within an easy driving distance.
The best way to see and experience Cologne's Roman past is by car. Drive around
the city to see the Roman Sewer and Praetorium (Town Hall); parts of the city
wall and towers constructed to protect the city; various Roman mosaics and baths;
and the Roman North Gate and Castrum Divitium, a military camp built in 310
AD. Most of these sites are outdoors, easily accessible and well worth a visit.
On the south side of the Altstadt (old city) you will find the Overstolzenhaus,
Cologne's only remaining patrician house from the Romanesque period, built in
1220. The building boasts a lavish gabled façade, with beautiful round
arch windows. Today, the Overstolzenhaus is the home of the new media academy.
Just across the Rhine in the Rheinpark area, you will find the Claudius Spa.
It is considered to be one of the most beautiful thermal spas in Europe. A great
way to relax and unwind, the spa offers indoor and outdoor pools, sauna, massage
jets, bubble lounger, Jacuzzi, waterfalls and a wave pool.
For those travelling with children, don't miss the large theme park Phantasieland,
just outside of Cologne in Brühl. The theme park offers a range of rides
for all ages, as well as entertainment shows during the day and evening, and
is open all year round.
