Geography of Frankfurt

Frankfurt is located in a scenic valley between Hamburg in the north and the
Alps in the south. The city straddles the Main River, with the north bank made
up of the financial and business districts, while the south bank boasts lush
greenery, a relaxed atmosphere and is a wonderful area to explore on foot. Due
to the city's modern high-rise architecture and financial status, it is locally
known as 'Mainhattan'.
The various mayors of Frankfurt have put a lot of effort into making the city
green and providing parkland for residents and visitors a like. A botanic city
ring has replaced the enclosing city walls of old Frankfurt. Along the Main
River is a park landscape where bankers take their lunch break beneath statues
of heroes from the past. Bethmann Park, northeast of the city centre, with its
Chinese gardens, is one of the city's most interesting parks.
A local favourite is the Palmengarten. This botanical garden boasts exotic
flora, with beautiful trails, ponds, greenhouses, a rock garden and lawns that
provide a beautiful setting for a simple stroll or picnic. The garden also has
conservatories which are home to vegetation from different areas of the world:
the Tropicarium hosts tropical vegetation; the Sub-Antarctic House displays
plants from South America and New Zealand; and the Entrance Conservatory houses
insect-eating plants and climbing vegetation. The small lake in the centre of
the garden can also be enjoyed by rowboat.
The Westend, home to over 400 financial institutions, is the financial district
of Frankfurt. Here the skyline of Frankfurt can be enjoyed from close-up. The
loveliest park, also known as Frankfurt's 'green lung,' is the Grüneburgpark.
This park was created in the 19th century and laid out in the English garden
style. It is a popular haunt of bankers, with many eating their lunch outside
or jogging. On the northeastern edge of the park lies the Botanischer Garten,
a favourite among locals who enjoy a quiet stroll.
