What to see by foot: Frankfurt

Frankfurt is a sprawling metropolis and although at first glance it can look
confusing to the visitor, the city is inviting to those wanting to explore it
on foot. The city boasts a network of fast, modern subways, trams and buses.
Consider purchasing a Frankfurter Tageskarte (Frankfurt Card), available from
any of the tourist offices in the city. This card allows unlimited travel anywhere
within the greater Frankfurt area, plus transport on the shuttle bus to and
from the airport, as well as half-price admission to any of the city's museums.
The Hauptwache is the hub of Frankfurt's city centre. The centrepiece is a
beautifully reconstructed baroque guardhouse dating from the 18th century. Just
across the square is the Katharinen Kirche, which was constructed in 1343. In
fact, Goethe was christened and confirmed at this church.
On either side of the Hauptwache lies Frankfurt's premier shopping district.
The Zeil is the city's largest pedestrian area, with shops and malls galore.
For upscale and luxury shopping, go to the Goethestrasse and Fressgasse, where
there is an abundance of brand name boutiques and excellent cafés.
The Römer is a square, with the statue of Justice in the centre, surrounded
by three beautiful medieval patrician's houses and the Kaisersaal, which today
is the seat of Frankfurt's Lord Mayor. The Kaisersaal is adorned with statues
of four German Kaisers, including Friedrich Barbarossa, and a sculpture of an
eagle, the symbol of Frankfurt. The beautiful Kaisersaal saw German emperors
being crowned in the past and today is primarily used for functions. Every year,
during the Christmas season, a huge Weihnachtsmarkt (Christmas market) is held
in the square and should not be missed.
Another beautiful area to explore on foot is the Schaumainkai, popularly known
as the Museumsufer - between the Eiserner Steg and Friedensbrücke bridges.
This area is home to the finest museums in Frankfurt. A total of seven museums
lie on the south bank of the Main.
The two most impressive are the Liebieghaus and the Museum für Kunsthandwerk.
The Liebeghaus is a sculpture museum and is considered to be one of the most
important in Europe. The building is a villa dating from the 19th century and
its impressive collection includes objects from ancient Egypt, classical Greece
and Rome, and medieval and Renaissance Europe. Also nearby is the modern art
museum, Museum für Moderne Kunst.
