What to see by car: Frankfurt

The central location of Frankfurt makes it conducive to exploring nearby areas
by car. The Autobahn connections are superb and road signs are excellent when
navigating to outlying areas.
An hour's train ride south of Frankfurt lies the charming town of Heidelberg,
an extremely popular town with visitors. Home to Germany's oldest university,
the town has a lively atmosphere thanks to its many students. The town itself
is located on the banks of the River Neckar, with an imposing Gothic and Renaissance
castle on the hilltop overseeing the town.
The picturesque town of Aschaffenburg lies 40kms southeast of Frankfurt and
was originally a Roman settlement on the banks of the Main River. Here visitors
can enjoy the streams and woodlands of the Spessart Mountains, which are a great
escape from the city. The town has managed to maintain its provincial feel,
with weekly fairs held in the square, a large pedestrian zone and parks dotted
around the town.
A popular side trip is to the spa town of Wiesbaden, located 40kms west of
Frankfurt. Wiesbaden is located between the Rhine and the Taunus Mountains and
has been a spa town since Roman times. The town boasts 26 hot springs, with
temperatures varying from 47C to 66C. Wiesbaden also prides itself as a cultural
centre, hosting the International May Festival of music, dance and drama every
spring. People from Frankfurt also like visiting Wiesbaden for its casino.
