Travelling to Hamburg
Hamburg, located on the Elbe River, is the second-largest city in Germany.
It is roughly 300 kms northwest of Berlin, 120 kms northeast of Bremen and 150
kms north of Hannover.
The two main autobahns that provide connections to Hamburg are the A1 from
the south and west and the A7 from the north and south. Two other secondary
autobahns provide connections to Hamburg: the A23 from the northwest and the
A24 from the east. Road signs to Hamburg are along all the autobahns, making
driving hassle-free.
Hamburg provides excellent rail connections for the traveller, as the city
is joined with most of the rail lines of north Germany. In fact, the majority
of visitors arrive by train. There are two major railway stations in Hamburg:
the Hauptbahnhof (main railway station), which is centrally located and the
Hamburg-Altona station, located in the western part of the city.
Both train stations are connected to each other by S-Bahn (tram) and provide
connections to most major German cities, as well as other European destinations.
For example, there are 15 trains to Berlin and 33 to Hannover daily.
Just across the street from the Hauptbahnhof is the bus station. The Central
Omnibus company operates long-distance bus services, linking Hamburg with many
other German cities. Short-haul buses are operated by the Hamburger Verkehrsverbund
and provide easy connections to surrounding towns and villages.
Hamburg-Fuhlsbüttel Airport is located about 10 kms north of the city
centre. The airport is serviced by many scheduled airlines as well as charter
companies, with regular flights to major German airports and many European and
intercontinental destinations. British Airways and Lufthansa provide direct
air links to London. The state-of-the-art airport offers many amenities to the
traveller, including: shops, boutiques and a range of restaurants.
The Air Express bus 110 runs every 10 minutes, linking the airport with Hamburg's
rail network, the U-Bahn and S-Bahn (underground and tram), providing easy access
to the city centre. There is another bus that departs every 20 minutes to the
Hauptbahnhof and takes about 25 minutes.
Hamburg, being a port city, also has ferry services to England. Ferries to
Harwich, England, depart from the St Pauli Landungsbrücken in Hamburg and
are serviced by Scandinavian Seaways. The journey time is roughly 20 hours.
