What to see by car: Hamburg
Nestled in the heart of northern Germany, Hamburg is a great location from
which to explore the North Sea coast as well as other outlying areas. For something
unique, visit the Willkommen-Höft (Welcome Point), which lies half an hour's
drive outside Hamburg. Every ship that passes this station, which was founded
in 1952, is welcomed in its own language and with its national anthem from sunrise
to sunset. Watch the flag of Hamburg being lowered by the station as a ship
sails through and the ship lowering its own flag in return. More than 50 ships
pass the Willkommen-Höft on a daily basis.
Wedel, just outside Hamburg and near the Willkommen-Höft, is located on
the lower Elbe and provides some relaxation away from the hustle and bustle
of the big city. Locals favour the Schulauer Fährhaus, where you can enjoy
a fabulous fish meal in the spacious garden or watch the ships go by as you
dine on some German delicacies. In the cellars of the Schulauer Fährhaus
is the Buddelschiff-Museum. It showcases over 200 model ships inside bottles.
Drive across the canal into the Neustadt, the baroque centre of Hamburg. Here
you will find famous landmarks, such as the Michaeliskirche, the largest Baroque
church in northern Germany. The famous Peterstrasse is lined with baroque-style
buildings and music enthusiasts shouldn't miss the Johannes Brahms Museum. The
eastern side of Neustadt is well known for its shopping, gourmet restaurants,
bars and trendy night clubs.
