Hannover is a modest little city that is still enjoying the fruits of hosting
Expo 2000. The city is most famous for its many trade fairs, which attract business
people from all around the world, and is one of Germany's hubs of industry and
commerce. Despitethis, wherever you are in Hannover, you won't be far from a
park or garden.
Hannover boasts one of the finest baroque gardens in the world, which should
not be missed. The Herrenhäuser Garten (Royal Gardens of Herrenhäusen)
is the only surviving baroque-style garden and a masterpiece of living art.
The Grosse Garten (Large Garden) was created in 1666 and is surrounded by a
moat. It featuresmany walking trails among the wonderful rose and flower gardens.
The Grosse Garten also has one of the highest fountains in Europe, standing
at a height of 72 metres. The smaller Berg Garten (Mountain Garden) is a botanical
garden filled with rare orchids and other tropical flowers.
The Niedersächsisches Landesmuseum (Lower Saxony State Museum) is one
of the most important regional museums in Germany. Exhibits cover geology, biology,
botany, medicine and the history of Lower Saxony. The museum also boasts an
aquarium. The Kindermuseum (Children's Museum) is a learning experience for
children about life in prehistoric times. The museum's art gallery is home to
an impressive collection of art, withpieces by Rubens, Rembrandt and Van Dyck,
among others.
Hannover hosts the oldest and largest Flohmarkt (flea market) in Germany. Visit
the Am Hohen Ufer every Saturday from 07:00 to 16:00 along the banks of the
Leine River. The flea market is not the only shopping choice in Hannover. In
fact, Hannover is known as 'the Milan of Germany' and Hannoverians are extremely
fashion conscious. Bahnhofstrasse and Luisenstrasse are the places to go for
numerous boutiques, and the Galerie Luise is a shopping mall boasting many designer
shops.
