Geography of Munich

Munich is one of Europe's most visited cities. The city boasts 1.3 million
inhabitants, making it the third largest city in Germany. It is the economic
centre for the north- south European trade and a centre for the high-tech and
manufacturing industries.
The city centre of Munich is bisected by the Isar River, flowing northwards
from its source 60 kms away in the Bavarian Alps. The city is not only famous
for its beer gardens, of which there are plenty, but also its regular gardens
which are abundant around the city.
The Hirschgarten will give you a glimpse of what Munich used to be like. The
park lies between the Donnersberg Bridge and Nymphenburg Park, and has been
a deer park since 1791. In 1890, the largest beer garden was built there, with
a seating capacity for 8,000 drinkers. The park is a favourite retreat for locals.
The Englischer Garten, which is Europe's largest city park, is not for the
prudish. This park is famous for the nude sunbathers who show up any time a
ray of sunshine breaks through the clouds; in fact, on a nice day it seems like
half of Munich is sunbathing nude here. You don't have to go nude to enjoy the
park's natural beauty though.
The Botanischer Garten is magnificent. It was established in the early 20th
century and is located on the north side of the Nymphenburg Park. The 40-acre
park boasts 15,000 plant varieties from all climates and is considered to be
one of the best botanical gardens in Europe.
