What to see by foot: Munich

Munich is a great place to explore on foot. Most of the city's sights are clustered
on the Isar River's left bank and it is easy to orient yourself with the oxidised
onion-domed towers of the Frauenkirche, a landmark that can be seen from anywhere
in the city.
The Altstadt, old town, is only a five-minute walk from the Hauptbahnhof, the
main railway station. It is the historic centre of Munich, with the Marienplatz
at its heart.
There is plenty to see at the Marienplatz, which features the glowing Mariensäule,
Mary's Column, erected in 1638 to celebrate the withdrawal of the Swedish forces.
Other attractions include: the neo-Gothic Neues Rathaus and City Hall with its
famous Glockenspiel chiming four times a day.
The square boasts two churches: the Heiliggeistkirche with its breathtaking
rococo ceiling; and the magnificent St Peterskirche. Just east of Marienplatz,
you will find the restaurant quarter offering something for every taste. Maximillianstrasse
is the main shopping street in Munich, with many boutiques and quaint shops.
The most amazing sight in Munich is the Schloss Nymphenburg, an amazing baroque
palace that was built in the early 18th century as the royal family's summer
residence. The two-storey dining hall is painted with amazing frescoes and the
Gallery of Beauties boasts 38 paintings. The Heraldic Room and the Chinese Lacquer
Room also should not be missed. A magnificent English-style park surrounds the
palace and includes: a hunting lodge, Chinese teahouse, bathing house and tropical
greenhouses.
The Olympiapark is located in the north of the city and was the site of the
1972 Olympics. This 740-acre park boasts the stadium that is the premier venue
for various sporting events and concerts in Munich. To experience the Olympic
feeling, swim in one of the pools or jog around the Olympic track. Take the
elevator to the top of the Olympiaturm for a panoramic view of the city. Also,
nearby you will find the BMW museum.
No visit to Munich would be complete without a visit to the world famous Hofbräuhaus.
Established in 1589 by Duke Wilhelm V, it seats more than 4,000 drinkers. For
a really authentic experience, drink your beer on the ground floor with 1,000
other patrons and blaring brass music.
