What to see by car: Munich
    
Munich is a great place from which to explore the outlying areas by car. Within
an hour's drive of Munich, you will find lakes, mountains, spas, castles, medieval
towns and alpine resorts. Farther afield, it is easy to reach the Alps, Austria,
Italy or Switzerland on Germany's great autobahns.
A short drive outside of Munich lies the breathtaking Starnberg Five Lakes
Region. The Starnberger See and Ammersee are favourite weekend destinations,
offering a whole range of water sports. The Tegernsee area is a tranquil resort
town; and the spa town of Bad Tölz boasts natural springs and clear mountain
air, perfect for some relaxation. Further south is the famous ski resort, Garmisch-Partenkirchen,
a great place to visit during the summer or winter.
Prien am Chiemsee lies roughly 100 kms southeast of Munich and is one of the
most beautiful lakes in Bavaria. Surrounded by the Bavarian Alps, many resorts
line the shores of the lake. The main attractions, however, are the two islands
in the lake: Frauenchiemsee and Herrenchiemsee. Herrenchiemsee is the site of
the palace built by Ludwig II, who intended to build a palace to rival Versailles
in France. It is possible to reach the two islands by steamers that make regular
trips throughout the day.
Amid all this beauty surrounding Munich lies Dachau, the notorious concentration
camp of the Nazi regime. Shortly after Hitler became Chancellor, the first German
concentration camp was built here, on the grounds of a former ammunition factory.
During its notorious history, between 1933 and 1945, more than 200,000 prisoners
were imprisoned at Dachau. It is possible to tour the camp; and two barracks
have been rebuilt to give visitors a feel of the horrible conditions prisoners
endured. The museum showcases photographs and documents, in an effort to present
the facts simply.
