Historical interest: Munich

Compared to other German cities, Munich is considered young, having sprung
out of a dispute between Guelph Heinrich der Löwe (Henry the Lion) and
Bishop Otto von Freising in 1156 AD. Munich is named after a settlement of Benedictine
monks on the banks of the Isar River known as 'zu den München', meaning
'at the site of the little monks'. The name was shortened to just München
and the little monk remains the symbol of the city, even today.
Henry the Lion granted Munich the right to mint its own coins and hold weekly
markets, allowing the town to thrive as a trading centre. The town also benefited
from the lucrative salt trade across the Isar River. Thanks to the trade, Munich
quickly grew into a thriving city.
Munich became the home of many creative minds and artists, such as Kandinsky,
Marc Klee, Strauss, Ibsen and Thomas Mann - all thriving in the suburb of Schwabing,
which post-WWII would become notoriously famous as the location of the Dachau
concentration camp.
Munich was the hotbed of the rise of Hitler's National Socialist movement:
the party's first meeting took place in the Hofbräuhaus in 1920. Munich
was later stigmatised as being the hub of Hitler's operations. The city was
severely damaged by Allied bombing during WWII. Half the city was reduced to
rubble and, at the war's end, Munich was occupied by the US forces.
During the post-war years, Munich benefited from the recovery of the large
German industrial companies, such as Siemens, BMW and MAN, which are headquartered
in Munich. With a recovery in the economy, Munich won the prestige to host the
1972 Olympic Games. This happy event unfortunately ended in tragedy when 11
Israeli athletes were killed by Palestinian terrorists.
