What to see by car: Gibraltar
There are some wonderful drives to be had and sights to be seen near Gibraltar,
including stunning mountain scenery, beautiful beaches and historic towns.
On the western side of the bay is the port of Algeciras. Algeciras may not
be a beautiful city but it does have a gritty individuality about it and, unlike
some of the Costa resorts, is a very genuine place with a real port atmosphere.
Wander around the backstreets where you can find several traditional tea shops
which specialise in the traditional Moroccan mint tea. There are lots of reasonably
priced restaurants to try and several have terrific views of the Rock of Gibraltar.
Visitors that have the time to wander will find quiet parks and tree-lined plazas
almost hidden away from the rushing travellers.
Northwest of Gibraltar, the port city of Cadiz is one of the oldest settlements
in Spain, founded in around 1100 BC. Built on a peninsula, Cadiz has a fascinating
atmosphere featuring narrow alleyways, back streets, open squares and spectacular
churches - all close to the immense blue waters of the Cadiz Bay. The sea walls
and the waterside walkways are strikingly beautiful, and wonderful places to
stroll for sunrise or sunset. The Museo de Bellas Artes displays interesting
and rare paintings of saints by Francisco Zurbaran and also contains an impressive
archaeological exhibit of Cadiz' ancient past.
Located northeast of Gibraltar, Puerto Banus is the meeting point of the jet-set
in Marbella. Here you'll find the most beautiful yachts, the most elegant shops
and the best restaurants. The shining white buildings make a fine contrast with
the dark blue sea. The Plaza de los Naranjos is a beautiful square in typical
Andalucian style with some Moorish influences, and its name comes from the many
orange trees growing there. Have a look at its 15th century Renaissance fountain,
the 16th century town hall and the 17th century Casa Del Corregidor.
