Geography of Athens

Greece is mostly mountainous, with ranges extending into the sea as peninsulas
or chains of islands - the highest point being Mt Olympus at 2,917m. Greece is
located in southern Europe, with the Ionian Sea to the west, the Aegean and Turkey
to the east, and the Mediterranean to the south.
Athens, in the province of Attica, is the capital and largest city in Greece.
It lies on a small plain that extends southward to the Saronic Gulf, a branch
of the Aegean Sea. The city centre is 11kms from the coast and forms a single
metropolitan area with the port of Piraeus. Greater Athens has an area of 427
sq km and a population of around 4 million.
Athens is surrounded by mountains: Aigaleo to the west, Parnes to the north,
Pentelikon to the northeast and Hymettus to the east. Most are of limestone
or marble, which was used to construct the ancient buildings of the city.
The plain on which the city lies contains isolated limestone hills, including
Lykavittos (339m) and the flat-topped Acropolis (156m), around which the city
grew. The city is on the Ilissus River, which is dry for much of the year and
carries abundant water only after winter storms. Athens has a typical Mediterranean
climate, with hot, dry summers and mild winters. Rainfall is slight.
