Travelling to Crete

Crete has the Aegean Sea on its north side, and the Mediterranean Sea on its
south. It's about 300kms south of Athens and is reached either by air or sea.
There are daily flights from all the cities in Greece and from an increasing
number of major European cities direct to either Iraklion or Hania; the former
being the main port of entry into Crete. Most visitors arrive on chartered airlines
and will usually have a free transfer to the hotel thrown in. Chartered airlines
include: Olympic Airways, Air Greece, Aegean Airlines and Cronus. Flight time
from Athens is under an hour.
Iraklion Airport is situated about 5kms to the east of Iraklion on the coast,
and taxis are the preferred means of transport to the town if a shuttle hasn't
already been pre-arranged. Hania Airport is located about 15kms east of the
town of the same name.
If you choose to visit Crete by boat, you may leave from the port of Piraeus
to the south of Athens using Minoan Lines or ANEK, arriving again at either
Iraklion or Hania ports. Car ferries leave for the island several times a day
from Piraeus, the overnight ferry being popular. Ferries also arrive from different
locations in Greece including: Thessaloniki, Rhodes, Kalamata and Glythio, plus
some of the Cyclades islands and Kythira. However, these can take a long time
when weather conditions are poor.
Ferries also arrive from Italian locations including: Brindisi, Ancona, Bari
and Venice. It is also possible to catch a ferry to Crete from Cyprus. Services
are scarce out of season between November and April.
