What to see by car: Crete

There are lots of places worth seeing and within reasonable driving distance of
both of the main towns. Roads are generally of a good quality, with highway 90
running the length of the northern part of the island and highway 97 creating
a ring road around the centre. Care should be taken on the more precipitous mountain
roads.
Hania can be the starting point for a tour to western Crete, a part of the
island with magnificent natural beauty. West of Hania, at a distance of 4.5kms,
is the hill of Profitis Ilias, where the memorial and tomb of Eleftherios Venizelos
and his son Sophocles are located.
The most famous region on the island is the Samaria Gorge. This national park
starts at the village of Omalos at an altitude of 1,227m, and ends after a walk
of approximately 18kms to the beach of Agia Roumeli. The gorge is open from
May to the beginning of October and is definitely a must-see for everyone.
The main town, Rethimno, on the northern coast, is about an hour's drive west
of Iraklion Airport. There is a well-preserved Venetian fort behind the harbour,
and like the other large towns on the north coast, Venetian influence is apparent
in the architecture. The prefecture of Rethimno combines the gentle scenery
of the northern and southern coastlines with the precipitous gorges of the Idi
and the White Mountains.
In the Lasithi region, Elounda and Ierapetra are the most developed resorts.
Other resorts include Agia Galini, Agia Marina, Agia Pelapia, Amnissos, Amoudara,
Gouves, Kokini Hani, Limenas Hersonissou, Malia, Sitia and Stalida.
