Mini guide to Ixia
Ixia is located in the Mediterranean Sea on the northwest coast of Rhodes. Located
just six kilometres from the town of Rhodes, Ixia is a well developed, yet quieter
resort, boasting a superb sandy beach and laid-back atmosphere.
The main attraction here is the excellent beach and the many water sport attractions
it offers. What also makes this a very popular resort is its close proximity
to the island's capital, Rhodes - with its medieval walled city (a UNESCO World
Heritage site), clustered around the ancient harbour of Mandraki.
The beach is one of the most organised on the island. During the summer season
it gets rather windy, which makes it ideal for: windsurfing, jetskiing, waterskiing,
sailing and parasailing. For those that prefer to swim with larger waves, Ixia
is the best location on the island.
There is a wide range of accommodation to suit most tastes; no matter where
you may be staying, all shops, restaurants, clubs and quaint romantic cafés
are within easy reach. There are a few pubs and bars which close at midnight,
and most hotels provide excellent entertainment programmes. If you're hankering
after a livelier nightlife, take the short taxi ride into Rhodes town.
Nearby, the ancient labyrinth consisting of a couple of hundred narrow streets
and alleys of Rhodes' medieval town is a tourist's paradise, and includes an
art gallery and several museums. Farther afield, the legendary village of Lindos
is the jewel in the Dodecanese crown and undoubtedly one of the nicest spots
in Greece. The village is quaint with its cobbled streets and white stuccoed
houses; it is also topped with a fortified ancient acropolis, sloping down to
the sea.
Rhodes International Airport is only 5kms from Ixia and taxis are available.
Alternatively, you can take the Rhodes-bound bus which stops at Ixia. Rhodes
has ferry links not only with Athens, Crete and the islands of the Aegean, but
it also receives ferries from Cyprus, Turkey and Israel. Service and schedules
change regularly, so check ahead of time.
