What to see by foot: Kos
Kos town is strewn with archaeological sites opening like fissures, and a surprising
number of striking and significant structures, sacred and secular, enfolded
into the modern town.
One of the most famous sights is the massive Hippocrates Plant Tree on the
right side of the harbour, believed to have been planted by Hippocrates himself.
With a huge trunk 12m in circumference, it stands in front of the entrance to
the Knights Castle and is considered to be the oldest tree in Europe. The Castle
of the Knights of St John, built in the 15th century, is the most impressive
monument of the Venetian period. It features medieval defensive architecture
including a double wall and moat, and is still in surprisingly good condition.
While you're strolling about the old harbour, you might take note of the sculptures
by Alexandros Alwyn in the Garden of Hippocrates opposite Dolphins Square. A
painter and sculptor with something of an international reputation, Alwyn long
maintained a studio in the village of Evangelistra.
The Archaeological Museum, also in the town of Kos, contains finds from the
Classical, Hellenistic and Roman eras, including ancient ceramics, small statues
of Aphrodite and Eros, intricate mosaics and a 4th century BC statue of Hippocrates.
To the west and south are a number of impressive excavations and remains, the
jewel of which is the Roman Odeon with 18 intact levels of seats.
Kos' old town is a delightful tangle of pedestrian lanes soaked in sun, with
plenty of restaurants and bars to lazily while away the day or night.
