Mini guide to Lefkas
Lefkas is located just off the western coast of Greece, in the Ionian chain.
Visitors enjoy the island for its excellent beach resorts and hidden coves,
superb water sports conditions and rugged mountainous terrain.
There is a wide selection of accommodation, and a welcome sight on the island
is the lack of high-rise buildings. The sheltered east coast beaches are generally
child-friendly, with calm, warm waters and weak currents. The west coast however,
has rougher sand, crashing waves and steep cliffs; it is here that you will
find miles of beautiful abandoned beaches, even in the summer.
The capital of the island is also named Lefkas, or Lefkada town, and is located
in the north. It's a busy little working town, full of alleyways and small side
streets, and is ideal for strolling. The main pedestrian street is full of shops
and is best visited in the cooler morning hours before the siesta. There is
a pleasant, relaxed atmosphere in the local bars and coffee shops, and the nightlife
is good.
Water sports are extremely popular on the island, especially in the southern
resort town of Vassiliki, which is a windsurfing Mecca, even in the low season.
Lefkas is also big on sailing and the Ionian Regatta, every September, is spectacular.
Walking is very popular here, whether you like to wander along coastline and
headlands, tackle rugged mountains, or just take a gentle stroll through the
olive groves.
If you hire a car, head for the inland town of Karia, the second-largest village
on the island and the centre of arts and crafts. Athani is a lovely traditional
Greek village on the western coast, perched high on the hills above the sea.
You can pass through here on the way to some of the best beaches on the western
coast of Greece, such as: Egremni, Gialos and Porto Katsiki.
Lefkas is reached by highway 42 from the Greek mainland. The nearest airport
to Lefkas is Preveza Airport, approximately 30 minutes drive from Lefkada town.
There is a lack of public transport and taxis are scarce, so try and book an
airport taxi in advance if possible.
