What to see by foot: Rhodes
    
Once home to the Colossus of Rhodes, the town of the same name has the best of
both worlds, with an historic walled old town and all the comfort and amenities
of the lively modern new town.
Above the modern city on Monte Smith Hill, with the sea visible on two sides,
stand the remains of the ancient Rhodian Acropolis. This is a pleasant site
to explore leisurely while you enjoy a picnic, and there is plenty of shade
available. The restored stadium and small theatre are particularly impressive,
as are the remains of the Temple of Pythian Apollo.
Overlooking the harbour, the old town is surrounded by massive 14th century
walls, 4kms around and in some places nearly 12m thick. On entering the city
through the Freedom Gate, look out for sights including: the Avenue of the Knights
Templar, the Museum of Decorative Arts and the Byzantine Museum (located in
a 13th century church).
The 15th century building of the Knights' Hospital houses the Archaeological
Museum, which displays a fine collection of coins, pots and sculptures from
the Mycenaean to the Roman era. The medieval city officially ends at the Palace
of the Grand Masters along Knights' Road.
The new town embraces the old one and extends south to meet the Rhodian Riviera,
a strip of luxury resort hotels. At its northern tip is the city beach, in the
area called 100 Palms, and the famed Mandraki Harbour, now used as a mooring
for private yachts and tour boats.
The new town is the livelier of the two, with several cafés on the harbour
behind Academy Square or on Galias, near New Market. The nightlife is lively
and exciting, with the bulk of the bars and clubs lining up along Diakonou Street.
