What to see by car: Rhodes

Rhodes town is an exciting destination, but there is a lot more waiting to be
discovered on the rest of the island, including many magnificent beaches, other
historic towns and a lush mountainous interior.
Lindos is one of the island's major tourist attractions, lying 47kms to the
south of Rhodes. The village has perfectly preserved its medieval character,
with pebble-covered streets and whitewashed houses built on a slope just over
the sea. A series of steps leads to the ancient Acropolis, which is situated
over 100m above sea level. The 4th century Doric Temple of Athena lies nearby.
Most people come to Rhodes to relax on the beaches, and the more sheltered
east coast has the best beaches by far. Alternatively, the west coast of Rhodes
is subject to shore winds and can be rough, but is a windsurfer's paradise.
The best way to choose a beach is to drive around the island on the main coastal
road.
Faliraki, 14kms to the south of Rhodes town, is the best resort on the island
and is therefore very busy in the summer months. Faliraki is a cosmopolitan
resort with an exquisite long sandy beach and plenty of bars, restaurants and
romantic cafés.
There are many other resorts along this stretch of coast, including Ladiko
and its emerald sea waters, and Afandou, an old Rhodian village with an interesting
church and golf course. If it's traditional villages and secluded beaches you're
after, keep heading south past the villages of Plimiri and Gennadi.
An alternative to the usual beach scene is to take the mountain road in the
centre of the island from the village of Kolimbia, on the eastern coast, to
Kritinia in the west, passing some charming villages and spectacular scenery
on the way.
