Mini guide to Thassos
The island of Thassos is located in the northern Aegean Sea near the mainland
of Macedonia. The island's main town is also called Thassos and is on the northern
coast. From here, it is easy to explore the island's ancient monuments and its
famous marble mines. The island also has a reputation for producing good, quality
wines and delicious honey.
The town of Thassos is easy to negotiate on foot, and many of its buildings
are constructed of the local marble. The Agora is the main market in town, and
the archaeology museum is located at the market's side entrance. In the museum's
garden, you will find statues of eagles, lions and other creatures.
Probably the town's greatest attraction is the four-kilometre wall of marble
that surrounds it; you can also visit the marble factories to watch the stone
being fashioned into smooth slabs. Alternatively, there are many appealing beaches
near Thassos town, of which Makryammos is a good example, with its soft-sand
beach and inviting clear waters.
There are plenty of opportunities for shopping in town, and the locally-made
honey and olive oil make particularly good souvenirs to take home with you.
When passing local bakeries, keep your eyes open for the local speciality -
puff bread, which is stuffed with spinach and sheep's milk cheese.
It is worth taking a drive around the coastal road that skirts the island to
see some of the ancient monuments, such as the Archangelou Monastery between
Alyki and Astris in the south. The village of Panagia on the east coast is particularly
picturesque, with its narrow streets, whitewashed houses and slate roofs. Just
near Panagia, Golden Beach is one of the island's most popular spots for swimming
Kavalla's Megas Alexandros Airport is nearest Thassos, and is located just
30 minutes from the town's main harbour. You can also fly to Thessalonika International
Airport and then cover the last 225kms by bus or taxi, followed by a ferry.
