Travel on highways in Hungary can be slow and frustrating, as the roads have been neglected. However, much work has been done in the last decade, and the main routes are pretty convenient. The E60 (or M1) connects Budapest with Vienna and the west; this highway was recently expanded into a multilane motorway and is now a toll road from the Austrian border to the city of Györ. The E65 connects Budapest with Prague and areas to the north.

The Hungarian State Railway (MÁV) service can at times suffer from tardiness. The trains themselves seem a little dated, but that adds to the atmosphere of the pastoral journey. Trains from Austria and Slovenia arrive at the main station in Budapest, while southbound trains depart from Keleti Station.

Many trains connect through Vienna, where 11 daily trains depart for Budapest. Six daily trains connect Prague and Budapest, while one connects Berlin with Budapest, and two connect Warsaw with Budapest. The train trip between Vienna and Budapest takes about 3 hours, 30 minutes.

Buses connect Budapest with the rest of the country, and the network is extensive, with regular departures. You can also catch Volánbusz/Eurolines buses non-stop to many European destinations as far away as London and Copenhagen. Buses bound for central Europe and Hungary's south and west leave from V Erszébet tér; buses for Eastern Europe, Greece and Turkey and destinations in Hungary north and east of the capital, leave from the Népstadion; while XIII Róbert Károly körút is for more local destinations.

Farihegy Airport is Budapest's international airport and has a recently built terminal servicing more than 30 international airlines. The national carrier, Malév Airlines, flies non-stop to transatlantic destinations as well as some Middle Eastern cities and most European centres.

If you're coming from Vienna, you can take the much vaunted hydrofoil along the Danube (via Bratislava). It's slightly more expensive, but much more luxurious than the train.
