What to see by foot: Budapest

You could say that Budapest is divided into two conjoining cities: Pest and
Buda. Buda has more historic merit, and lies on the south of the Danube overlooking
Pest, which has a much more modern appearance.
When exploring the city on foot, the walled castle district in Buda would be
an ideal starting point. It includes such attractions as: the medieval old town;
Royal Palace; Budapest Historical Museum; and the Hungarian National Gallery
and Library. The 700-year-old Gothic St Matthias Church is also there.
The turreted Fishermen's Bastion affords great panoramic views over the river.
Gellért Hill, adjacent to the Buda citadel, is home to a chapel that
is housed in a cave. Nearby are the Gellért baths, locally said to be
the best of the city's many hot springs.
When you cross the bridge over the Danube to Pest, you will be met by the noteworthy
Gothic Parliament buildings. It has been said that these buildings are not unlike
Britain's Westminster. Splendid neo-classical architecture abounds and attractions
include: the Opera House, Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Post Office Savings
Bank, Museum of Applied Arts and St Stephen's Basilica.
For a comprehensive insight into the Magyar history, head to the National Museum,
located in a stately 18th century building.
Alternatively, for a respite from the corridors of history, stroll around the
Andrássy Boulevard (Heroes' Square), which features statues of Hungary's
greatest leaders. All the Soviet-era statues have been banished to a park on
the city's outskirts.
The oldest and one of the most interesting parts of the city is Óbuda,
remarkable for its Roman ruins and small, quiet neighbourhoods which seem unchanged
since the turn of the century. North of Óbuda is the Roman civilian town
of Aquincum.
